My name is Shemika Mitchell and I am a Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner. I have been in healthcare for over 26 years. I graduated from Walden University in 2018, with a Masters Degree in Nursing and have been working as a Nurse Practitioner for the last few years. I started TruCare Telehealth and House Calls, because of the need for quality providers in the community during the COVID pandemic. The reason I dedicated my practice to people living with obesity is because I, myself am a person living with obesity, and I have felt and witnessed the stigma and morbidity that comes with having this disease. I currently have the disease controlled or in maintenance, but it requires daily attention and work. My grandma and my uncle died of the disease, my grandma was 62 years old when she passed and my uncle was 48 years old when he passed. So this is a personal and passionate project for me. I am a active member of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA), and often take courses so that I am well prepared to teach my core population the scientific aspect of the disease as well as how to conquer and control it, instead of allowing obesity to control us. My goal is to help bring the number of people suffering with the disease of obesity down, and train other individuals in the fight to get people healthy. I live in California and have four (4) beautiful children. I am happy and I know for a FACT that this is my calling and purpose.
